Magi-Nation was a Trading Card Game (TCG) that was released in the 1990’s and carried on into the early 2000’s, and to be honest it was the first game I really remember playing. It exists as a time capsule for me still, one of the main fonts used in the game is Papyrus even. PAPYRUS. It’s honestly incredible.

I spent hours using the online creature creator on their website, I built decks, designed my own characters and monsters, and battled with my friends and family. This game had a huge impact on my art at the time, and I think is honestly one of the seminal aesthetics that influence my art to this day.

Why am I bringing this game up now though? Well, because in a truly wild turn of events, the game is coming back to life now in 2024. A campaign on Kickstarter has already funded over 1000% and continues to power through stretch goals on the platform. The community this game built is still so committed after all these years, and so eager to share this game and world with new players!

So what is Magi-Nation? I honestly consider it a Gateway Deckbuilder game. With 40 card decks, and “multiple lives” in the form of 3 Magi cards that you use to help you pilot them, Magi-Nation is more streamlined and straightforward than other games like Magic the Gathering, but still has the agency and replay ability you look for in classic TCG Deckbuilder Battle games.
The world of the Moonlands is beautiful, nostalgic, and wholesome, but still has enough conflict and danger to keep you intrigued! I acknowledge my bias here, this game has remained super important to me as an artist and game designer.

Thanks for taking the time, happy gaming everyone!
